ASSITED LIVING follows 27-year-old Todd through his final day of work as a janitor at a nursing home. Todd smokes pot frequently on the job, which allows him to enjoy the surreal environment of the assisted living facility. He also breaks the monotony of his days with entertaining—and extremely unprofessional—diversions involving the residents: he rides through the halls in borrowed wheelchairs; he plays pool and Scrabble with them; he even “plays God” on the telephone, giving residents the illusion of speaking to their departed loved ones in heaven. But however much these activities cheer the seniors, Todd’s behavior angers the staff and undermines the policies of the home. It is ultimately Todd’s interactions with Mrs. Pearlman—a beautiful resident who longs for a visit from her son—that jeopardize his job. Mrs. Pearlman, who is in the early stages of Alzheimer’s, has difficulty distinguishing the real world from her memories of it. As her odd friendship with Todd develops, she begins to mistake the janitor for her son. When Todd in turn begins to assume the role, he rediscovers his own humanity and instigates a transformation for them both. For more info, check out the Official Website.

Undiscovered Gems

California Film Institute, IndieWIRE, and the Roxie team up to present IndieWIRE Undiscovered Gems, a selection from indieWIRE’s list of the Top Undistributed Films of 2004. An online film publication that Variety calls a “must read” for the independent film community, indieWIRE compiles such a list annually, based on hundreds of screenings at festivals worldwide, and its Top Undistributed Films list has been an invaluable resource for acquisitions executives for the past seven years. Since the 2004 list’s January publication, several of the films being screened are in the process of securing domestic distribution. This six-day series is a rare opportunity to see a selection of some of the finest festival films from around the world and, we hope, help those still searching for distribution.

In this real-life documentation of confrontation and recovery, we follow Celesta and Karen as they face head-on their demons and their courage. Producer/Director: Celesta Davis (US 2004) 76 min

Vera Farmiga gives a powerful performance as Irene in this intelligent and reflective story of addiction in modern small-town America. Writers: Debra Granik, Richard Lieske. Dear Pillow
Bryan Poyser’s striking debut is a brave story of contemporary loneliness and obsession that has been compared by Variety to the works of Todd Solondz and Larry Clark. Wes, an awkward and frustrated teenager, forms an unlikely friendship with an older man, Dusty, who lives in the same apartment complex and who writes for a porn magazine called Dear Pillow. Grappling with themes of sexual alienation and isolation, Poyser’s film is at once unsettling and believable, earning him a well-deserved IFP Independent Spirit nomination. Double Dare

Double Dare is a double-barreled, action-packed documentary about two Hollywood stuntwomen, Jeannie Epper and Zoë Bell. They have been set on fire, thrown off buildings, dragged by wild horses and hit by cars. As Hollywood stuntwomen, they are the anonymous, blue-collar heroines of film and television, taking the hits that make actors into stars. They stand in for the rare female action-hero, the typical "damsel in distress," and everything in between. Double Dare explores the lives of Jeannie and Zoë, the stunt doubles for Wonder Woman and Xena: Warrior Princess, as they face the challenges of a dangerous and male-dominated profession. The real women behind these two world-famous icons are at drastically different crossroads in their lives. One, a grandmother, struggles with the aging process and Hollywood's dearth of older female roles; the other, a young woman, is brash and unaware of the history that has preceded her in this notoriously macho field. When Jeannie becomes a mentor for Zoë, these two women from opposite sides of the world and opposite ends of their careers find a way to survive in the industry together. The film follows Jeannie and Zoë’s daily struggles to stay employed, stay thin and stay sane-- against the backdrops of Xena, Wonder Woman, 6 Feet Under, and Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill. It features interviews with Steven Spielberg, Quentin Tarantino, Lucy Lawless and Lynda Carter. Double Dare is directed by Amanda Micheli who received an Academy Award, the IDA award and a national PBS broadcast for her first film, Just for the Ride. Directed, photographed and produced by Amanda Micheli. For much more information, jump into doubledarethemovie.com. Showtimes: Nightly at 7:00 & 9:00. The Film Arts Foundation co-presents:
Hal Hartley's
The Girl From Monday

"The Girl from Monday embodies maverick filmmaker Hal Hartley's signature use of a calculated aesthetic and frank dialogue. It may surprise die-hard fans with its sexual explicitness and playful tone. Hartley himself calls it a "fake sci-fi movie," but in keeping with his reputation, he has loaded The Girl from Monday with provocative ideas. A creature drops into the ocean from a distant constellation called Monday. She inhabits the body of a stunningly beautiful girl and begins a search for her friend, whom she expects is in trouble. The world, as it exists, is in turmoil. It is after the "great revolution," and prominent executive Jack Bell is not eager to turn her in. He is struggling with his own demons after helping orchestrate the dictatorship of the new city-state and establishing the Human Value Reform Act. Citizens are now a public offering on the stock exchange: each time they have sex and remain unattached, their value increases. Paralleling this future world to our own fills The Girl from Monday with irony. The film's "special effects" consist in the fact that it is sexy, fun, and exhilarating. But don't think you can escape without thinking."-- John Cooper, Sundance Film Festival. The Girl From Monday includes Sabrina Lloyd from the new hit CBS show "Numbers," Bill Sage, Leo Fitzpatrick, Tatiana Abracos, and Edie Falco. Written & Directed by Hal Hartley. DV. USA. 2005. Runnting time: 84 mins. Showtimes: Nightly at 6:00, 8:00 & 10:00. Additional Wed, Sat. & Sun matinees at 2:00 & 4:00.

Presents
THE CENTURY OF THE SELF

The San Francisco Independent Film Festival is proud to present THE CENTURY OF THE SELF, a four-hour British documentary which “ponders the impact Freud's theories had on 20th century culture, particularly the way psychological ideas muddied the distinctions between consumerism, politics, democracy and advertising.” -Dennis Harvey, Variety. We live today in a society dominated by the self and its feelings. To 'be oneself' is no longer considered selfish but healthy and virtuous. THE CENTURY OF THE SELF shows how this revolution in how we see ourselves happened over the past 100 years. It asks if this has really been a liberation of the self or if it has just made us more vulnerable to being manipulated and controlled by those in power? To many in both politics and business this triumph of the self is the ultimate expression of democracy – power has finally moved to the people. This series examines the validity of that idea while recounting the extraordinary role members of the Freud family have played in fostering and encouraging this irresistible rise of the self, from Sigmund to Matthew. This 4-part documentary will be shown as two programs. The admission for Parts 1 & 2 is $8:00, $4.00 for seniors. The admission for Parts 3 & 4 is $4.00 for everyone. Directed, written and produced by Adam Curtis. 2004 UK. DV. Runningtime: 240 minutes. Don't forget to check out SF Indie Fest. Showtimes: Parts 1&2: Nightly at 6:30. Additional Sat. & Sun. matinees at 2:00. Parts 3&4: Nightly at 8:40. Additional Sat. & Sun matinees at 4:10.

"Remarkable. This is four hours of sheer brilliance, a film with the insight into contemporary life that usually takes scholars a full century's distance to acquire."
-- Mick LaSalle, SF Chronicle

"A fascinating viewpoint...there's nary a dull moment between wonderful archival clips and an extraordinary interview roster that encompasses strategists Dick Morris and Philip Gould, actress Celeste Holm (who shared Marilyn Monroe's psychiatrist), est founder Werner Erhardt, Mario Cuomo, surviving relatives of Freud and Bernaise, and many others." - SF Bay Guardian.
