A Film About
The Pixies

"This fly-on-the-wall account of the titular rock gods' 2004 reunion tour isn't about how great the Pixies are. It's about who the Pixies are. Ten years and some change after the band's breakup, guitarist Joey Santiago is scoring a documentary. Alterna-queen bassist Kim Deal is recently rehabbed and refuses to tour without twin Kelly by her side. Songwriter and singer Charles Thompson, is getting divorced, getting remarried, and becoming a father. And drummer David Lovering is in really bad shape - his father has inoperable cancer. Old dysfunctional habits die hard - "We don't talk to each other that much," Deal observes - but touring and performing just might pull everyone together, after all. Of course, the performance footage is fantastic, and the filmmakers make clear how girl rockers worship Deal. But the real draw is the insight into the group's dynamic, heretofore shaded in mystery despite the best efforts of Spin. The scene of Lovering's inevitable meltdown , onstage during "Vamos" - is a shining moment in the rock-doc genre." -- Marrit Ingman, Austin Chronicle. Directed by Steven Cantor & Matthew Galkin. Cast: Charles Thompson (Frank Black), Kim Deal, Kelly Deal, Joey Santiago & David Lovering. Check it all out along with the trailer at www.loudquietloud.com. Running time: 82 mins. Fratricide A prize-winner on the international festival circuit, FRATRICIDE is an elegantly shot, gripping drama of young Kurds and Turks relocated to Germany where they hope to escape the tribal violence and poverty of their homeland. Instead, they find themselves strangers in a strange land: inhabitants of a soulless society where prostitution, street violence and prejudice offer no respite from the past. The friendship that evolves between one young man and the youngster he attempts to mentor suggests that love and loyalty are the best hope against bitterness and rage. But the harsh reality of refugee life in Western Europe, one that FRATRICIDE portrays with tremendous force and style, challenges even their best instincts. Written & Directed by Yilmaz Arslan. With Xewat Gectan, Erdal Celik, Nurettin Celik, & Bulent Buyukasik. In Kurdish, German & Turkish with English Subtitles. Germany. 2006. Running time: 96 Mins. Show times: Nightly at 7:00 & 9:00. How the Right stole the Election in 2004 and how they will steal it again in 2006: An Evening with Mark Crispin Miller Author of 'Fooled Again'

Come hear author Mark Crispin Miller speak about election fraud that occurred in Nov, 2004 and is likely to happen again. (Co-sponsored by SF for Democracy, DemocracyAction, and Election Defense Alliance) "Mark Crispin Miller's FOOLED AGAIN is a jeremiad aimed at the heart of the national Republican machine. But it's also a work of original reporting that in the end amounts to a solid case for Republican theft of the 2004 presidential election. FOOLED AGAIN may well describe the endgame that leads to sing-party dominance through the next eneration." -Chicago Reader. Calvaire
(The Ordeal)

In the tradition of THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, and DELIVERANCE comes this chilling Belgian horror that pushes the limits of shocking filmmaking. Director Fabrice Du Welz masterfully evokes a sense of deeply disturbing terror and grotesque comedy as Marc Stevens’ world goes profoundly and utterly wrong. In a mist-shrouded forest where inbreeding is rampant, and sanity seems impossible to maintain, it’s up to one man to survive a torturous mental, physical, and emotional ordeal at the hands of his sadistic captors. Laurent Lucas stars as a regular guy just trying to make an honest living as a traveling entertainer. When his car breaks down in the middle of the woods, a wandering local directs him to a decaying inn where he is welcomed by the psychologically fragile innkeeper. This is how Marc’s ordeal begins. CALVAIRE (The Ordeal) is the intense and unsettling story of a man, who, when in need of the kindness of strangers, finds nothing but madness and horror. Forced to submit to the insane will of innkeeper Bartel, Marc finds himself in a fight for his life which soon involves the entire village. At once disturbingly subtle and maniacally in-your-face, CALVAIRE marks the arrival of Fabrice du Welz, a new voice in international horror/suspense. Directed by Fabrice Du Welz. Written by Fabrice Du Welz, Romain Protat. With Stars: Laurent Lucas, Jackie Berroyer, Philippe Nahon. Belgium. In French with English subtitles. 2004. Running time: 90 minutes. 13 Tzameti

Twenty-two-year-old Sebastien (Georges Babluani) leads an impoverished life with his immigrant family constantly struggling to support them. While repairing the roof of a neighbor’s house, he overhears a conversation about an expected package which promises to make the household rich. Sensing the opportunity of a lifetime, Sebastien intercepts the package which contains a series of specific instructions. Following the clues, he assumes a false identity and manages to slip through the grasp of the enclosing police as he ventures deeper and deeper into the countryside. The closer he gets to his destination and the more people he meets along the way, the less he understands about what he is looking for. Ultimately, he comes face to face with a ring of clandestine gamblers placing bets on the outcome of a multi-player, high stakes tournament of Russian roulette. Directed by newcomer Gela Babluani, 13 TZAMETI (pronounced: ‘zah-meti’) is a winner-take-all thriller, where an unfortunate young man is transformed into Contestant #13 with no way out save his luck. I Like Killing Flies

In his feature debut, noted artist illustrator and video-director Mahurin celebrates one of his favorite restaurants – and ours – Shopsins, a Greenwich Village institution, much beloved by its loyal clientele for decades. With over 900 items on his menu, all conjured up in his Rube Goldberg-style kitchen the size of a walk-in closet, Kenny Shopsin is chef de cuisine and proprietor. When there is a lull in the cooking, he steps out from behind his Frankenstein stove and holds court, serving up morsels of wisdom and wit on life, death, sex, politics and even food. But, after 32 years in the same sheltered workshop, Kenny loses his lease and the family must now find a new location – a move vigorously supported both financially and logistically by customers who can’t bear the thought of life without Shopsins. Mahurin, himself one of the faithful, was asked to record the move for posterity, and what emerges is a hilarious and heartfelt hymn to individuality, independence, and idiosyncrasy – not just in the kitchen, but in life. Check out the entire Shopsins menu! Directed by: Matt Mahurin. Featuring: Kenny Shopsinl. Rated R. Running time: 79 mins. Nightly at 6:15, 8:00 & 9:35 Additional Sat & Sun mats. At 2:30 & 4:30

Rush To War
Between Iraq and a Hard Place

plus: Robert Scheer in Person!

Rush to War explores the background of events leading up to 9/11. Among the issues considered are: the Cold War and CIA interventions around the globe from the 1950s through the 1970s, America's involvement with the Afghan resistance against the Soviet Union in the 1980s, and an extensive history of the United States' two wars with Iraq. What emerges is a disturbing indictment of the Bush administration's eagerness to invade Iraq at any cost, with particular emphasis placed on the administration's policies and actions on the "War on Terror" and its consequences for global security in the 21st Century. Riveting, balanced, informative, and ultimately terrifying, Rush to War: Between Iraq and a Hard Place presents compelling insight into the neo-con agenda just as Americans get ready to head to the polls next on November 2. Director Robert Taicher interviewed a number of government officials, foreign policy experts, and journalists, including former Senator George McGovern, former ambassadors Joe Wilson and Peter Tomsen, Samantha Power (Harvard University), Zia Mian (Princeton University), Thomas Gouttierre (University of Nebraska at Omaha), and Mark Danner (UC Berkeley); nationally syndicated columnists Robert Scheer, Molly Ivins, and Chris Hedges (New York Times). The film also includes commentaries from Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, former chief UN Weapons Inspector Scott Ritter, former General Anthony Zinni, and former terrorism czar Richard Clarke. For more info, log onto www.rushtowar.com/

After the screening, Mr. Taicher and Mr. Scheer will discuss the film and Mr. Scheer’s new book, PLAYING PRESIDENT: MY CLOSE ENCOUNTERS WITH NIXON, CARTER, BUSH I, REAGAN AND CLINTON- and HOW THEY DID NOT PREPARE ME for GEORGE W. BUSH. Robert Scheer will sign his book after the discussion.
Admission: $10.00. Showtime: 7:30.

The Root Of All Evil?
Episode 1: The God Delusion
Episode 2: The Virus of Faith

Richard Dawkins will NOT be appearing in person as previously announced. Our apologies.

How is it, asks Richard Dawkins, that despite science having exposed old religious myths, militant faith is back on the march? The mechanism for perpetuating beliefs that Dawkins describes as leading to murderous intolerance, is by imposing religion on children who are too inexperienced to judge it for themselves. We wouldn't categorise children according to their parents' political stance, says Dawkins, since they are too young to make up their minds about such matters. But we segregate them in sectarian religious schools, where they are taught superstitions drawn from ancient scriptures of dubious origin, which promote a 'contradictory and poisonous system of morals'. Dawkins compares this to a virus, which infects the young and is passed down the generations. Transmitting such a 'warped reality' to young people, says Dawkins, amounts to indoctrination. Children are uniquely vulnerable and if they fail to question and shake off such superstition, they remain in a state of perpetual infancy. Physicist and Nobel prizewinner Stephen Weinberg describes religion as an insult to human dignity. 'Without it,' he says, 'you'd have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, it takes religion.' Dawkins agrees. It is more moral, he says, to do good for its own sake than out of fear. Morality, he says, is older than religion, and kindness and generosity are innate in human beings, as they are in other social animals. The irony is that science recognises the majesty and complexity of the universe while religions lead to easy, closed answers. Is there no more than just this life? asks Richard Dawkins. How much more do you want? We are lucky to be here, he says, and we should make the most of our time on this world. Richard Dawkins IN PERSON, Sunday, Oct 29! For more info, log onto channel4.com.
