THE SOURCE FAMILY Opening Night Party! Join the Source Family for one huge night!
JOIN THE SOURCE FAMILY FOR ONE HUGE NIGHT AT THE ROXIE, LEADING UP TO THE WEEKLONG RUN OF THE NEW DOCUMENTARY THE SOURCE FAMILY!
To celebrate the theatrical release of Jodi Willie and Maria Demopolous’ incredible new documentary THE SOURCE FAMILY, the Roxie, Drag City and the Chapel are teaming up to immerse the most radical, curious, radically curious and curiously radical denizens of the Bay Area in a full-on SOURCE FAMILY simulacrum on Thursday, May 2!
At the tail end of the 1960s, Father Yod (born Jim Baker in 1922) was the toast of the Sunset Strip – he owned the most happening organic restaurant in LA and fronted a mind-melting psych rock band. Also, he had 13 wives and mystical theological teachings that drew hundreds of white-clad followers. These controversial views exiled the group to Hawaii, where the group dramatically came apart. Years later, family members reconnected and the rock band reformed, revealing how their time with Father Yod shaped their lives in the most unexpected ways.
Kicking off at 7pm, the Roxie will be serving selections from the sacred recipe book of the original Source Restaurant on the Sunset Strip, lovingly prepared by Emily Atkinson (late of Bar Bambino, Humphry Slocombe, Truck Stop and Shotwell’s). The 8pm screening of THE SOURCE FAMILY will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers, as well as Source Family members Isis Aquarian (the family’s designated documentarian, whose incredible footage makes up a lot of the movie), Electricity and Galaxy Aquarian. After all questions are answered and all food is consumed, we’ll all walk three blocks up Valencia Street to The Chapel, where Penetration Blues Band: A Yahowa 13 Tribute will blow minds with Yahowa 13 covers until the wee hours. This supremely psyched-out super group includes Michael Beach (Colossal Yes, Electric Jellyfish (AU), Meercaz), Noel von Harmonson (Comets On Fire/Sic Alps), Utrillo Kushner (Comets On Fire/Colossal Yes), Charlie Saufley (Assemble Head In Sunburst Sound), Adam Camilleri (Electric Jellyfish (AU)), and Peter Warden (Electric Jellyfish (AU)). Word has it; some special guests will be sitting in!
