LaborFest - International Working Class Film & Video Festival
Thr, July 5 – Sun, July 8
Laborfest www.laborfest.net, which is held annually to commemorate the San Francisco general strike of 1934, brings together filmmakers and labor artists from around the United States and internationally. Some of this year's films will include Big Brother is Watching by Korean Labor News Production on the use of new spying technology by Samsung on their workforce to prevent unionization. It will also include The Ballad Of Joe Hill. This rarely seen Academy Award nominated film is about an ingenious immigrant labor organizer who is framed on a murder charge in a highly sensationalized trial with little evidence. Despite worldwide appeals by the King of Sweden and the President of the United States, Hill is martyred after being shot by a Utah firing squad in one of the most controversial capital punishment trials of the 20th Century.
It will also be screening San Francisco Film & Photo Leagues principle film, Century of Progress (1934) about the struggle of California farm workers and their fight for unionization. Also screening will be Mother Jones, The Most Dangerous Women in America (2007) by Rose Feurer and Laura Vazquez. The festival will also be screening two films about the work of Ken Loach and his life. Carry On Ken (2006) by Toby Reisz and Rebel County (2006) by Pat Collins.
