OBSESSION
Back in the 70s and 80s Brian DePalma made a career of reinventing Alfred Hitchcock’s films for his own darkly sinister and perverse purposes, giving critics and audiences alike much to argue about at the time. This film, coming on the heels of his psycho-delic low-budget sleeper Sisters, is a blatantly odd take on Vertigo and a mesmerizing run-up to Carrie, Dressed To Kill, and Body Double. The ultimate link to Hitchcock comes in the form of Bernard Herrmann’s highly evocative score, calling to mind the great work he did for The Master. Starring Cliff Robertson, Genevieve Bujold, and John Lithgow. Written by Paul (Taxi Driver) Schrader. Directed by Brian DePalma. In COLOR. 35mm Studio Print. 98 mins. 1976. FRI at 6:00 and 10:00
LAST EMBRACE
Another shamelessly flamboyant homage to Hitchcock is this engrossing thriller which calls to mind a variety of the suspense meister’s classical scenes and moments re-imagined for a modern day audience. Roy Scheider, an actor of great intensity, is memorably dark as an intelligence agent who goes off the deep end after his wife is tragically killed in restaurant shoot-out. His breathless journey to the other side takes him on unimaginably fascinating detours. Dazzling cinematic technique from start to finish, it’s a film that stands tall on its own merits. Co-starring Janet Margolin, Sam Levene, Christopher Walken, and Mandy Patinkin. Directed by Jonathan Demme. In COLOR. 35mm Studio Print. 102 mins. 1979. FRI at 8:00 only!
