A lifetime professional safecracker with a long history in stir, agrees to engineer a huge diamond score for a notorious gangster. Seeking nothing more than a comfortable retirement with all the niceties that a fortune can provide, our boy falls prey to the vagaries of Fate and, in true classic noir style, stares down at a very uncertain future. One of the earliest of the new wave of noir-inspired crime films that began around this time, this one holds firm to its rightful place as one of the best. An embittered and crippled Vietnam vet (John Heard) and his best friend, a shiftless loser (Jeff Bridges) conspire to hold a powerful local billionaire responsible for the brutal murder of a prostitute. A harrowing emotional saga, graced with indelibly powerful performances and Jordan Cronenweth’s spectacular cinematography.
