NOT NECESSARILY NOIR
MICKEY ONE
Nothing less than an American version of a French New Wave film finds cheapo nightclub comic Warren Beatty fleeing Detroit for the safety of Chicago as local gangsters make life impossible for him. Now performing under the enigmatic name "Mickey One," our hero drifts deeper and deeper into an existential sewer, never quite understanding just who or what wants him out of the way. A dazzling mix of Euro-technique and Hollywood mise en scene make this one of the most curious studio films of the 60s. Two years later the star and director would reteam for Bonnie and Clyde, casually reinventing the state of American cinema along the way. This film may not be as immediately recognizable, but it's every bit as outrageous and influential. Co-starring Alexandra Stewart, Hurd Hatfield, Franchot Tone, and Jeff Corey. Directed by Arthur Penn. In B&W. 35mm Studio Print. 93 mins. 1965. WED at 6:10 and 9:50
THE WOMAN CHASER
Adapted from the outre 1960 paperback pulp novel by the amazing Charles Willeford, this eye-poppingly retro film holds honest and true to the spirit of that demented book. A sociopathic used car salesman (Patrick Warburton, Puddy on the "Seinfeld" TV show) determines that his fate is to direct a Hollywood movie—and nothing short of murder will keep him from realizing his godforsaken dream! A bizarre mix of hardboiled pulp irony and way-off-kilter black humor, it's a film that lurks lazily in the mind long after its final monochrome images leave the screen. Co-starring Eugene Roche, Emily Newman, Paul Malevich, and Lynette Bennett. Directed by Robinson Devor. In B&W. 35mm print. 93 mins. (Director's cut). 1999. WED at 8:00 only!
