Breaking up is never easy, but for the young and spirited Jo Goodman (Joanna Leeds), it’s just the beginning of a series of diverting setbacks. In sunny California, where the beautiful weather contrasts with Jo’s personal storms, she fumbles, falters, tries to be better, and stumbles again. She seeks closure with her ex (Nat Faxon), rejects advice from her Tetris-obsessed mother (Mary Steenburgen), navigates her medical mysteries, and struggles to maintain her newest relationship with Greg (Allen Leech), a man she met online.
A modern-day tragicomedy, Bulldozer balances wit and hilarity with cringe-worthy honesty. Written by Joanna Leeds and directed by her brother, Andrew Leeds, this film is simultaneously infectiously funny and painfully awkward, which is what makes it work. Untangling yourself from a mess of your own making is hard, but Bulldozer reminds us that there is always room for a little laughter, a little growth, and a lot of grace. —Karina Curry
