Poor Things

  • A young woman in an orange dress with a frilly collar is held close by a man with a mustache.
  • A man with a face shockingly disfigured with deep scars looks to his right.
  • 3 people, backs turned to us, look at the view from a terrace out over a city by water with 2 dirigibles floating in the cloud-filled sky.
  • A woman looks up, eyes wide open, with her head encased in some sort of steam punk contraption on a table possibly in an operating room.

From filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and producer Emma Stone comes the incredible tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.

Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. Screenplay by Tony McNamara. With Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, Ramy Youssef.
