Walking in the Time of Uncertainty

Premiere night and Q&A

Walking in the Time of Uncertainty follows the protagonist’s passage through time and space, surrounded by a series of increasingly dream-like landscapes devoid of people but full of possibility.

Post film screening Q&A with director Masha Kechaeva and the film team will be moderated by Geoffrey Diesel, Bay Area-based artist and educator.

About the Film

There are places that call us. Places that change us. We have to leave our home to see them face to face. After visiting them we will be completely transformed. What is in between those two moments – the moment we leave and the moment we arrive?

In her first short film, director Masha Kechaeva turns her attention to the idea of time, rituals and transitions. Landscape of a city is slowly melting into sand dunes. Buildings become mountains, the land becomes vast and the eyes can rest on the distant line of horizon. The desert is an oasis for contemplation. When your eyes are sharp enough you can see far beyond – you can see stars, planets, you can see other worlds. Inspired by Michelangelo Antonioni “Zabriskie point” and Philipp Garrel “The inner Scar,” “Walking in the Time of Uncertainty” tells the story of an explorer who leaves the city in search of a bigger world. Oliver Ousterhout, DP, turns this journey into expansive meditation on time and space and Max Mollring, colorist, makes every scene into a dream-like painting.

The choir of voices that accompany the Explorer fills the journey with cosmological concerns and excitement of infinite space. The source of voices is a book “No One May Ever Have the Same Knowledge Again: Letters to Mt. Wilson Observatory, 1915-1935” published by Museum of Jurassic Technology. They melt into a hypnotizing musical palette created by San Francisco-based musician and composer Jason Cirimele. The mix was made by Dan Wool who is also known for his work as a composer for film makers Alex Cox (Repo Man, Sid & Nancy) and Phil Tippett (Mad God).

Before/after the screening there will be photo prints available for purchase(17×10). All of the prints enseal surreal landscapes of the film and will be made on 100% cotton paper using a high-resolution format inkjet printer. By making them a part of your collection you will support the film’s journey to the festivals.
