The Roxie Theater, a San Francisco landmark in the Mission District, brings people together to meet and connect through distinctive cinematic experiences. Guided by the passionate belief that engaging with a movie doesn’t end with the credits, we invite filmmakers, curators, entertainers and educators to interact with our audiences. We provide inspiration and opportunity for the next generation, and serve as a forum for the independent film community reflecting the spirit of the diverse Bay Area population. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

History

The Roxie is one of the oldest continuously operated cinemas in the United States, with its history tracing back to the early 1900s.

We continue to shine in our community as a beacon of unwavering independence, originality, and integrity. Guided from the start by crazy visionaries who pursued dreams over profit, we strive to keep the weird and wonderful alive in our little corner of San Francisco.

Vision 2030

Today, the Roxie Theater is a vibrant and flourishing cultural landmark in San Francisco. Its iconic marquee illuminates 16th Street as a beacon for independent cinema lovers and blends historic charm with bold and expansive programming that celebrates diverse voices through premieres, retrospectives, and interactive events.

The Roxie is more than a theater. It is a home alive with engagement and inspiration where filmmakers, artists, and audiences forge a creative community through workshops, conversations, collaborative projects and fierce programming that place The Roxie at the forefront of independent film.

As we look to the future, we envision thoughtfully modernized theaters that deliver inspiring, immersive experiences, while expanded lobby and lounge spaces that invite the community to connect, discuss, and dream.  We envision spaces that go well beyond ADA requirements to create an equitable experience for all visitors, employees, and artists, regardless of ability. We envision an even deeper investment in supporting filmmakers and in removing financial barriers for patrons and community partners to participate in the Roxie.

Outside our walls, we envision expanding our presence throughout the city as we lead the way in creating a thriving ecosystem locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. We see a future where the ravenous, wide-spread appetite for independent cinema is met with wildly diverse platforms for communities to experience the unique joy of visionary cinematic stories.

By 2030, the Roxie will be the leader of a movement, a model for independent cinemas across the country to serve as places where creative communities thrive through inspiration, entertainment, and connection.

We invite you to celebrate the spirit and resiliency of The Roxie by joining our Forever Roxie campaign. For over one hundred years, we’ve kept independent cinema an integral part of our little corner of the Mission District, and with your help, we’ll keep it going for over a hundred more. No matter the size of your donation, you will have an impact!
