A Keanu SUMMER
Speed
The screening on July 6 will be followed by a talk and book signing with local author Sezin Devi Koehler (Much Ado About Keanu), a sociocultural study of Reeves’s work.
Jack Traven (Keanu Reeves), an LAPD cop on SWAT detail, has a fearless nature and a keen understanding of the criminal mind. That, and some luck have kept him alive. But Jack’s luck is being put to the ultimate test. An elusive bomber-extortionist Howard Payne (Dennis Hopper) is seeking vengeance after his latest ransom scheme is thwarted. Payne gives a personal challenge to Jack: A bomb is rigged on a city bus, which will detonate if the speedometer drops below 50 MPH. Poor Annie (Sandra Bullock) gets shoved into the driver’s seat, while Jack does his best to save the day.
Part of A Keanu Summer.

Much Ado About Keanu is the first ever sociocultural study of Keanu Reeves’ entire body of creative work, from film to television and beyond. It connects existing media studies around various themes in Reeves’s films—particularly Asian and Indigenous representation, gender studies, philosophy, technology, and sexuality studies—in a “critical Reeves theory” sure to engage not just fans but all of us who live in Keanu’s world.

Sezin Devi Koehler is a multiracial Sri Lankan/Lithuanian American and member of the San Francisco Writers Grotto collective. Pop-culture writer, entertainment journalist, and Rotten Tomatoes-certified film and TV critic for Black Girl Nerds, Sezin’s bylines also include Entertainment Weekly, The Daily Beast, Scalawag Magazine, Tasteful Rude, Black Girl Nerds, Certified Forgotten, Teen Vogue, and many more. Sezin writes from an East Oakland historic landmark that looks uncannily like the house from Practical Magic, where she can see the San Francisco Bay from her own window.
