A sublimely blank Ryan O’Neal is an opportunistic Irishman climbing the social ladder from ambitious villager to reluctant soldier to spoiled nobleman in Kubrick’s adaptation of Thackeray’s novel, as sourly witty as it is visually sumptuous. Specially modified lenses allowed Kubrick to capture scenes illuminated only by candlelight, but that’s just one of this picaresque tale’s many visual splendors, helping earn cinematographer John Alcott an Academy Award and securing the film’s place among the most celebrated achievements in cinematic photography.
