Locarno in Los Angeles at The Roxie
De Noche Los Gatos Son Pardos
Community partner: Frameline
Now in its sixth year, Locarno in Los Angeles is a unique showcase of cinematic highlights from each year’s Locarno Film Festival. On June 27, with the support of the Swiss Consulate General of San Francisco, a taste of the Swiss festival will come to the Roxie when Acropolis Cinema and Locarno in Los Angeles present the local premiere of Valentin Merz’s stylish queer thriller De noche los gatos son pardos.
In Merz’s prize-winning first feature, a crew is shooting a libertine costume film in the countryside when Valentin, the director, suddenly disappears. While the local police investigate, the filming continues but takes an odd turn. Robin, the cameraman and director’s lover, keeps a promise and reaches the Mexican Pacific.
In person: Jordan Cronk, founder of Acropolis Cinema and co-director of Locarno in Los Angeles.
Taking as much liberty as possible, we worked with immersion and improvisation and surprised ourselves while making this film. It is about the big drives in my life: filmmaking, love, sex and death. —Valentin Merz
