McSweeney’s presents: Documentary Now! – Grey Gardens + Sandy Passage

Presented in partnership with McSweeney’s to celebrate their Documentary Now! companion book—an expansive, behind-the-scenes dive into the series and the documentary traditions it lovingly spoofs.

Meet Big and Little Edie Beale: mother and daughter, high-society dropouts, and reclusive cousins of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Living together in a decaying East Hampton mansion, the two create a world all their own—at once intimate, eccentric, and unexpectedly resilient. Directed by Albert Maysles and David Maysles, Grey Gardens became a cult classic and cemented Little Edie as both fashion icon and philosopher queen.

Followed by Documentary Now! episode “Sandy Passage” (21 min), a pitch-perfect homage that reimagines the Beales’ world with uncanny precision, equal parts loving tribute and brilliantly absurd send-up.
