FRAENKEL FILM FESTIVAL 2026
Klute (35mm)
Selected by Janet Cardiff & George Bures Miller
Jane Fonda is Bree Daniels, a sex worker who becomes an essential and unwilling participant in a missing persons case being overseen by Donald Sutherland’s John Klute. Cinematographer Gordon Willis employs daringly dim lighting and disorienting camera angles to amplify the atmosphere of unrelenting dread. Still, it’s Fonda, in her first Oscar-winning role, who provides the emotional, vividly humane center of Pakula’s film, creating a sympathetic and complex portrayal of a woman surviving amid the dangers of early-seventies New York City.
