With Filmmakers Q&A after the Saturday, August 12th screening!

First Looks, the Roxie’s Oscar-Qualifying Theatrical Release program, supports filmmakers in their Academy Award quest. We put together a unique lineup of shorts (with running times of 40 minutes and under) from any genre (documentary, narrative, and animation) to serve as the film’s Academy qualifying run.

Forgotten Spaceman
Narrative (16:10 minutes)
Director: Elham Ehsas

Synopsis: In 1988, Afghanistan sent its only astronaut into space, a journey that proved home can be farther than the stars.

Somewhere to Be
Narrative (9 minutes)
Director: Christy Chan

Synopsis: In this dark comedy, an eight-year-old girl has to grow up quickly during a tense car ride. Set in 1985.

Epic Yarn
Animation (11:56 minutes)
Director: Andrew Gordon

Synopsis: Pushed too far by two spoiled children, a gentle lamb finally stands up for herself—launching an unexpected adventure filled with danger, hard lessons, and the true meaning of forgiveness.

Vital
Narrative (14:11 minutes)
Director: Amir Zargara

Synopsis: A mother in Iran, considers selling her organs to save her daughter, while in the United States, a doctor faces ethical dilemmas to save his daughter, revealing the complexities of organ trade.

Blue Sunbeam
Documentary (39 minutes)
Director: Karoly Palfai

Synopsis: Thalia, a 6-year-old autistic girl, steps beyond her familiar world when she joins an inclusive karate group. This unique method offers new opportunities for people with disabilities, allowing Thalia to begin a new chapter in her life.
