Tekkonkinkreet 20th Anniversary at New People Cinema
SCREENING AT NEW PEOPLE CINEMA in JAPANTOWN
Part of Nippon Vibes: Japanese Cinema Weekend at New People
Following its reopening in historic San Francisco Japantown, New People Cinema continues its collaboration with The Roxie through a series of Japanese cinema pop-ups. After launching earlier this year, Nippon Vibes returns for its second edition—this time built around the theme “Reframing.” Through the eyes of Japan’s most visionary filmmakers across generations, join us for a cinematic journey that reshapes how you see the world and its “truth.”
Celebrating its 20th anniversary with a stunning 4K restoration, Michael Arias’s adaptation of Taiyo Matsumoto’s manga is a visually electrifying, genre-defying work of animation.
Black, a tough and skilled fighter, and his naïve younger brother White, are two orphaned street kids patrolling the slums of Treasure Town. When gangsters threaten to tear down what’s left of the city to build a theme park, the kids are thrown into a nonstop battle to survive, taking on yakuza, alien assassins, and ultimately their own demons. Based on the legendary manga by Taiyo Matsumoto and featuring stunning, action-packed visuals from STUDIO4°C (Mind Game) and a lush soundtrack by electronic music pioneers Plaid, Tekkonkinkreet is a modern cult classic – a sensitive story of brotherhood and connection in a decaying world, now beautifully remastered in 4K.
