The Last Edition

Celebrate Silent Movie Day at The Roxie!

Co-presented by San Francisco Film Preserve, and introduced by SFFP’s Executive Director

Kathy Rose O’Regan, with live piano accompaniment by Wayne Barker!

We’re delighted to present a 100th anniversary screening of Emory Johnson’s THE LAST EDITION, a thrilling newspaper drama that takes place in and was shot on location in San Francisco, restored by the San Francisco Silent Film Festival and EYE Filmmuseum, Netherlands.

Tom MacDonald (Ralph Lewis), assistant foreman of the San Francisco Chronicle pressroom, is passed over for the post of foreman in favor of a younger man. He gains satisfaction, though, when his son, Ray (Ray Hallor), obtains a good job in the district attorney’s office. Reporter Clarence Walker (Rex Lease), in love with MacDonald’s daughter Polly (Frances Teague), is sent to obtain evidence against notorious bootlegger Sam Blotz (Will Frank), who is protected by Assistant District Attorney Gerald Fuller (Cuyler Supplee). Blotz and Fuller frame Ray to put Walker off their track. (Adapted from AFI Catalog). (DCP, 80 min)

Preceded by the 1925 short film SAN FRANCISCO, THE GOLDEN GATE CITY, a fascinating snapshot of our city a century ago. (DCP, 5 min)
