My Name is Juani / Yo Soy la Juani
“High energy and memorable!” – Jonathan Holland, VARIETY
Introduced by Santiago Fouz Hernández, Professor of Iberian Studies and Film Studies at Durham University, UK.
A bold and visually striking work from Catalan filmmaker Bigas Luna, Yo Soy la Juani pulses with his signature blend of eroticism, hedonism, and biting irony. Following Juani, a restless hypermarket cashier eager to break free from her stifling surroundings, the film is a raw and provocative exploration of ambition, desire, and self-reinvention. True to Luna’s style, it brims with energy, provocation, and the grotesque—hallmarks of his work since his debut, Tattoo.

This screening marks 10 YEARS of ’The Bigas Luna Tribute,’ a touring retrospective of the films of one of Spain’s most iconic filmmakers of all time. The retrospective, launched by his daughter Betty Bigas right here at The Roxie in March 2015 has visited 10 countries since and some 30 cities since, including Barcelona, Copenhagen, Genoa, Edinburgh, Los Angeles, Madrid, Melbourne, Mexico City, New York City, Rio de Janeiro, San José or Sydney.
This special screening will include an introduction by Santiago Fouz Hernández, Professor of Iberian Studies and Film Studies at Durham University, UK, who coordinates and curates the events with Betty Bigas. He also produces and co-hosts the Bigas Luna podcast and is the author of the book The Films of Bigas Luna (forthcoming later this year in Manchester University Press).
