ZYZZYVA Movie Night with Ingrid Rojas Contreras: Secretary

Books! Banter! Cinema!

A film series made for San Francisco, held at the beloved Roxie Theatre in the Mission District and co-hosted by acclaimed author Ingrid Rojas Contreras and ZYZZYVA Editor Oscar Villalon, every ZYZZYVA Movie Night will feature an acclaimed writer sharing with you one of their favorite films—along with a reading list that speaks to their selected title.

We kick off our series on Tuesday, July 30, with R.O. Kwon and “Secretary”

Kwon calls the 2002 movie starring Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Spader “a sexy, kinky, bold, often hilarious romance with a complicated power that, 22 years after the film was made, hasn’t faded.” “Secretary” will be introduced by Kwon, whose most recent novel Exhibit was named Most Anticipated by the New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, and Vogue. Following the movie, there will be a short conversation with Kwon about “Secretary” and the nature and pursuit of desire.

We’ll have everything you’ll need for a grand literary night at the movies: books for sale, author signing, one-of-a-kind goodies, a recommended-reading list from Kwon, and a concession stand with all the drinks and eats your heart could desire.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with a book signing. Movie introduction starts promptly at 6:00 p.m., followed by a conversation at the end of the screening.
