Silent To Sound

Contrary to popular belief, cinema’s adoption of synchronized sound technology in the late
1920s did not create an unbridgeable chasm between filmmakers successful in the silent era
and those that came after. Many of the 20 the century’s greatest directors, actors,
cinematographers enjoyed successful careers during both eras, not only getting their start
before theatres wired for sound, they often producing some of their most exciting and enduring
works.

Our series Silent To Sound bridges the silent/sound divide with double-features presentation pairing great works from selected filmmakers. Not simply a before/after juxtaposition, the series intends to widen our view of the careers, filmographies, and artistic achievement of some of the film world’s most celebrated individuals. – Rob Byrne
