Noted for his workshop-based, improvisational “Direct Action” approach to filmmaking, Rob Nilsson has made some 45 feature films and won many awards including the Camera d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival for NORTHERN LIGHTS (1979), the Grand Prize at Sundance for HEAT AND SUNLIGHT (1988) and the San Francisco Film Critics Circle Marlon Riggs Award for the 9 @ NIGHT Film Cycle (2008). Film festival lifetime achievement awards and retrospectives includeMoscow, Mill Valley, Hong Kong, and New Delhi. John Cassavetes once proclaimed: “Nilsson’s films are beautiful, exciting, imaginative, unfamiliar—and outside of that, very good.”

As part of San Francisco filmmaker Rob Nilsson’s POINTS AROUND THE BAY FILM RETROSPECTIVE to take place in the Bay Area from January through March, that includes the 9 @ NIGHT epic 9-film cycle screening in its entirety at the Tenderloin Museum, The Roxie is honored to present Nilsson’s 1st first Direct Action Feature, SIGNAL 7 (’84) on Sunday, February 28, and ON THE EDGE AGAIN (’86) based on the historical Dipsea Race from Mill Valley to Stinson Beach, starring Bruce Dern & Pam Grier. Rob will appear IN PERSON after both shows!
